Naam Jagah Janwar Cheez: rules and how to play online

Naam Jagah Janwar Cheez is the notebook game every Indian kid has played at the back of the class. A letter is called out, say M. Now fill four boxes: a Naam (name), a Jagah (place), a Janwar (animal) and a Cheez (thing), all starting with M. Mohan, Mumbai, Mor, Mobile. Fast.

In English it is called Name Place Animal Thing. The idea is the same: be quick, be a little clever, and write something nobody else thought of, because unique answers score double.

In Mandli one round of Naam Jagah Janwar Cheez is one letter and takes about 2 minutes, with 2 to 10 players. The app picks the letter, runs the clock and does the counting, so nobody has to add up columns at the end.

Rules: kaise khelte hain

The letter

Each round starts with a letter shown for 3 seconds. Mandli never uses Q, X, Y or Z, because half the table would have nothing to write. Letters do not repeat in a room until all of them have been played.

Fill four boxes in 60 seconds

You have 60 seconds to fill Naam, Jagah, Janwar and Cheez. Each answer can be up to 30 characters. You can change answers until you press Done.

While writing, you only see your own answers. For everyone else you see how many boxes they have filled, from 0 to 4. That little counter creates a lot of panic.

STOP

Once all four of your boxes are filled, you can press STOP. The first STOP cuts the clock to 10 seconds for everyone (or leaves it alone if less time is left). Later STOPs do nothing. Pressing STOP also marks you Done. When everyone is Done, the round moves straight to checking.

Checking and challenges

Next, the app shows one category at a time, with everyone's answers, for 20 seconds each. If an answer looks wrong, give it a thumbs down. You cannot challenge your own answer, you get one challenge per answer, and you can take it back.

An answer is thrown out when challenges reach half of the other players, rounded up. With 5 players that is 2 of the other 4. With 2 players, 1 is enough. The screen moves on early when everyone taps Ready.

Result

The result shows the full table: every answer, what was thrown out and the points. Tap Ek aur round for a new letter.

Points kaise milte hain

An answer counts if it is not empty, starts with the letter and was not thrown out. A valid answer nobody else wrote gets 10 points. A valid answer someone else also wrote gets 5. Empty, wrong-letter or thrown-out answers get 0. When comparing, the app ignores case, spaces and punctuation, so Mumbai and mum-bai count as the same answer. A wrong answer never makes someone else's answer shared, so you do not lose points because of another player's mistake.

Jeetne ke tips

• Go for the less obvious answer. For M, everyone writes Mumbai. Madurai or Mysore is more likely to get the full 10.
• Fill the hard box first. Janwar usually runs out before Cheez does.
• Watch the box counter. If someone is at 4 of 4, the STOP is coming.
• Be fair with challenges. The table decides, and your answers are next.
• Keep answers short and spelled simply so the checking goes quickly.

Friends without the app can join from the browser link, with no login, just a name and a colour. In Saath mode you play side by side and laugh out loud at each other's answers. In Door mode there is voice chat inside the game, with mic and speaker buttons, and nothing is recorded. If someone's connection drops, their seat is held.
