Kaun Hai Nakli: the imposter word game, rules and how to play online

Imposter word gameNakli kaunOdd one out word gameChameleon word game

Kaun Hai Nakli is an imposter word game for 3 to 10 dost. Everyone gets the same secret word on their phone, say Golgappa. One person gets nothing. That person is the nakli, and their only job is to blend in until the vote.

Each player gives a one or two word clue. Too obvious and the nakli learns the word. Too vague and your friends start looking at you. Then everyone talks, points fingers and votes. If the nakli gets caught, they still have one last chance: guess the word and walk away with points.

A round takes about 5 minutes, so it is easy to play three or four in a row. You can play Kaun Hai Nakli sitting together in one room or over a call when the gang is spread across cities.

Kya chahiye: Just phones. The app deals the word, runs the timers and counts votes.

Rules: kaise khelte hain

The word

At the start the app picks a category and a word from it. Categories include Khana-Peena, Bollywood, Cricket, Jagah, Ghar ki cheezein, Jaanwar, Tyohaar aur Shaadi and School-College. Everyone can see the category.

Every player holds their phone to see the word for 10 seconds. The asli players see the word. The nakli sees that they are the nakli, and no word. Everyone taps Ready when done.

Clues, one by one

Players give clues in a fixed order, one turn each. You get 30 seconds to type a clue of one or two words, up to 24 letters.

  • The app will not let an asli player type the word itself, a spelling variant or a near-spelling. No shortcuts.
  • The nakli never goes first, because they would have nothing to go on.
  • If you run out of time, your turn is marked as skipped.

Charcha (discussion)

Once everyone has given a clue, there are 90 seconds to talk. Who gave a clue that did not quite fit? Who copied the person before them? It ends early if everyone taps Ready.

The vote

Everyone gets 30 seconds to vote for one player. You cannot vote for yourself, and you see who has voted but not for whom.

The player with the most votes is accused. If there is a tie at the top, or nobody votes, nobody is caught, and the nakli escapes.

The nakli's last chance

If the accused player really is the nakli, they get 20 seconds to type the word. The app accepts common spellings and small typos, so Panipuri counts for Golgappa. Get it right and the nakli still scores. Miss it and the asli players win the round.

Result

The result shows the word, who the nakli was, every vote and the points. Tap Ek aur round for a new word and a new nakli.

Points kaise milte hain

If the nakli is caught and cannot guess the word, every asli player still in the round gets 1 point. If the nakli is caught but guesses the word correctly, the nakli gets 2 points. If the vote misses the nakli (wrong person, tie or no votes), the nakli escapes and gets 3 points. If the nakli leaves the room mid-round, the round is void and nobody scores.

Jeetne ke tips

  • As an asli player, give clues that point to the word from the side. For Golgappa, say teekha paani, not puri.
  • Listen to the first two clues carefully if you are the nakli. The category plus two clues is often enough.
  • Do not rush to the vote. A clue that sounds right but is a bit too general is a classic nakli move.
  • If you think the nakli is close to the word, keep your clues vaguer on the next round.
  • Watch who votes last. Sometimes the nakli waits to follow the crowd.

Ghar wale rules aur variants

Undercover (in Mandli)

In Undercover the odd one out gets a similar word, like Coffee instead of Chai, and does not even know they are different. It has several vote rounds and needs 4 to 10 players. Mandli has it as a separate game.

Chits on paper (at home)

At home, people write the word on chits and leave one blank. It works, but someone has to make the chits and nobody can play fair as the dealer. In Mandli the phone deals, so everyone plays.

Kaun Hai Nakli? online kaise khelein

In Mandli, one person creates a room and shares the link on WhatsApp, or shows the QR code if you are in the same room. Friends without the app join from the browser link. There is no login, just a name and a colour. In Saath mode you sit together and talk out loud. In Door mode you play remotely and use the voice chat inside the game, with mic and speaker buttons. Nothing is recorded. If someone's internet drops, their seat is held for a while so they can come back. Scores carry across games in the same room, so you can follow Kaun Hai Nakli with Undercover or Raja Mantri Chor Sipahi. It is free and has no ads.
