Kaun Hai Chor: the detective game where one friend is lying

Kaun Hai ChorWho is the thiefChor kaun hai

Something has gone missing from the ghar. Maybe the Ghadi, maybe the Laddoo ka dabba, maybe the TV remote (again). One of your friends is the secret chor and knows exactly what they took. Everyone else is a gawaah, a witness, and each gawaah knows one true fact about the stolen item.

Kaun Hai Chor is a detective game where the questioning is out in the open. Players take turns asking each other yes-or-no questions, and every answer goes on a public board. Gawaah tell the truth. The chor can lie, but every lie sits on the board next to everyone else's answers, waiting to be caught.

About ten minutes a round, for 4 to 10 people who like to argue.

Kya chahiye: Just phones. The app deals roles and facts and keeps the board.

Rules: kaise khelte hain

Roles

Each player privately sees their card for up to 10 seconds: "Tum gawaah ho" or "Tum chor ho". There is exactly one chor. Twelve household items are on the table for everyone to see.

The chori

The chor has 15 seconds to tap one of the 12 items to steal. Gawaah tap "Jeb check karo" on the same grid, which does nothing, so every phone looks busy. This step never ends in under 8 seconds, so a fast chor gives nothing away. If the chor doesn't pick, the app picks for them.

Then, for 8 seconds, each gawaah sees their one fact, like "Chori ki cheez khaane-peene ki nahi thi". Every gawaah gets a different fact. No single fact is enough on its own, but together they can close in on the item. The chor sees only what they stole, not the facts.

Questioning

There are 3 laps. In each lap every player, the chor included, gets one turn of 25 seconds to pick another player and a yes-or-no question from a fixed menu, like "Kya woh bijli ya battery se chalti hai?".

The asked player has 10 seconds to tap Haan, Na or Pata nahi, and no answer counts as Pata nahi. You can't ask yourself, and nobody can be asked more than twice in a lap, so the chor can't hide and nobody gets hounded.

The board

Every question and answer goes on a public board: who asked, whom, what, and the answer. Gawaah should answer truthfully or say Pata nahi. The chor can lie. The trick is to spot the answer that doesn't fit with the rest.

Vote

After 3 laps everyone has 40 seconds to vote for the chor (not yourself) and guess the stolen item. The chor votes too, so their screen looks the same, but their guess scores nothing. Who voted for whom stays hidden until the result.

Result

The result shows the chor, the item, every gawaah's fact and the board with lies marked. If the top vote is tied, the chor is not caught.

Points kaise milte hain

If the top vote is the chor, every gawaah gets 1 point. Separately, every gawaah who guessed the item right gets 1 more. If the chor escapes (wrong top pick or a tie), the chor gets 3. If the chor is caught but fewer than half the gawaah guessed the item, the chor still gets 1. If the chor leaves mid-round, the round is void and nobody scores. Scores carry across games in the room.

Jeetne ke tips

  • Gawaah: ask questions your own fact can check. If an answer contradicts what you know, you've found a lie.
  • Ask different people the same question. Two gawaah should agree; a chor may not.
  • Chor: lie rarely. One lie that lines up with the board is safer than three.
  • Chor: say Pata nahi sometimes. Gawaah say it too.
  • Don't just catch the chor, guess the item too. It's a separate point.

Can the chor lie in Kaun Hai Chor?

Yes, the chor can lie. Gawaah should tell the truth or say Pata nahi. Lies are marked on the board at the end.

Kaun Hai Chor works well on a call, because the questions and answers sit on a board everyone can see. Kaun Hai Nakli and Sherlock Ghar are good ones too.
