Rang Milao: the colour matching card game, rules and how to play

Rang Milaocolour matching card gamecolor matching card game

Rang Milao is Mandli's own colour matching card game. Match the top card by colour or by number, throw action cards at your friends, and when you are down to one card, tap 'Mandli!' before someone catches you. First to empty their hand wins.

If you've played UNO-style games, you'll feel at home in about thirty seconds. The deck, the names and the art are our own, with desi touches like 'Chup!', 'Do Le' and 'Rang Badlo', and a catch rule that makes every last card a small race.

Mandli is points only. No money, no betting, no coins.

Kya chahiye: Just phones. The app shuffles 108 cards, lifts the cards you can play and handles every draw.

Rules: kaise khelte hain

The deck

Rang Milao has 108 cards in four colours: Pink, Neela, Mehendi and Haldi.

  • Number cards 0 to 9. Each colour has one 0 and two of each number from 1 to 9.
  • Chup! (2 per colour): the next player loses their turn.
  • Ulta (2 per colour): reverses the direction of play. With only 2 players it works like Chup!.
  • Do Le (2 per colour): the next player draws 2 and loses their turn.
  • Rang Badlo (4 cards): wild, you pick the next colour.
  • Rang Badlo + Chaar Le (4 cards): wild, you pick the colour, and the next player draws 4 and loses their turn.

Starting the round

Everyone gets 7 cards. The first number card from the deck goes face up to start the discard pile; action cards are skipped for this first flip. A random player goes first.

Your turn

Play one card that matches the top card by colour, or by number or symbol. A Rang Badlo can be played any time. A Chaar Le can only be played when you have no card of the current colour.

If you can't play, or don't want to, draw one card. If the card you drew can be played, you may play it right away or keep it. You get 20 seconds; if time runs out, Mandli draws one card for you and passes.

Picking a colour

When you play a wild, you get 8 seconds to pick the next colour. If you don't pick, Mandli chooses the colour you hold the most of. The effect of a Chaar Le hits the next player after the colour is set.

No stacking

A Do Le can't be answered with another Do Le, and a Chaar Le can't be passed on either. The next player simply draws and loses their turn.

Mandli! and Pakda!

When you are about to go down to one card, tap 'Mandli!'. You can tap it when you hold 2 cards on your turn, or any time you hold 1 card.

If you drop to one card without calling, anyone can tap 'Pakda!' on you until the next player makes their first move. If they catch you, you draw 2 cards. Whoever's tap reaches the server first wins the race: 'jiska pehle pahuncha, uski baat'. A wrong Pakda! does nothing, but you have to wait 2 seconds before trying again.

Winning

The first player to empty their hand wins, even if their last card is an action card (its effect still happens). When the draw pile runs out, the discard pile, except the top card, is shuffled back in. If players leave and only one is left, the round ends with no winner.

Points kaise milte hain

Winning the round, by emptying your hand, gives 30 points. Among the rest, the player with the fewest cards left gets 10; if several tie, each of them gets the 10. Every successful Pakda! is worth 2 points. Rounds are short, so the room score builds up fast over a few games.

Jeetne ke tips

  • Save your Rang Badlo for when you're stuck. It's the only card that always works.
  • Use Chup! and Do Le on the player who is close to winning, not just whoever is next.
  • Tap Mandli! the moment you have 2 cards on your turn. Don't wait for the last card.
  • Keep an eye on everyone's card count. The Pakda! chip shows up on seats you can catch.
  • Change the colour to one the next player seems to be missing; if they just drew, that's a clue.

Ghar wale rules aur variants

Stacking draw cards (at home)

Many groups let you answer a draw-2 with another draw-2 and pass the pain along. Rang Milao does not stack: the next player draws and loses their turn.

Draw until you can play (at home)

Some people keep drawing until they find a playable card. In Rang Milao you draw one card only, then play it or keep it.

Points from cards left (at home)

Some tables add up the values of cards left in hands. Mandli keeps it simple: 30 for the winner, 10 for fewest cards left, 2 per Pakda!.

Rang Milao online kaise khelein

Make a room in Mandli and share the link on WhatsApp, or show the QR code to friends next to you. Anyone without the app joins from the browser link with just a name and a colour, no login. In Saath mode you play in one room and shout 'Mandli!' out loud; in Door mode you play from different homes with voice chat built into the game (mic and speaker buttons, nothing recorded). Up to 10 people can play one round, and your points carry over when you switch to another game in the same room.
