Gadha Laut is the game where nobody wants to finish last. You throw cards to get rid of your hand, and the moment someone can't follow suit they hit the table with a 'thulla', and the unlucky player on top picks up the whole pile. The last one still holding cards is the Gadha. In some homes the same game is called Thulla or Bhabhi.
This page has the Gadha Laut card game rules the way Mandli plays them, with scoring, tips and the common home variants.
Mandli is points only. There's no money, no betting and no coins, just a friendly donkey stamp for whoever ends up last.
Kya chahiye: Just phones. The app deals, checks follow-suit and moves the thulla cards for you.
Rules: kaise khelte hain
Deal and the first trick
One 52-card deck is dealt out completely, one card at a time. With some player counts the first seats after the dealer get one extra card. Ace is high, 2 is low, and there is no hukum (trump).
Whoever holds the Hukum ka Ikka (Ace of spades) must lead it to start the first trick.
Follow suit
Play goes around the table. Every player must follow the led suit if they have it. You get 15 seconds per card; on timeout Mandli plays your lowest legal card.
Saaf: a clean trick
If everyone still holding cards follows suit, the trick is clean ('Saaf!'). The cards go to the discard pile face down and nobody sees them again. The player who played the highest card leads the next trick.
Thulla!
If you can't follow suit, you play any card you like. That's a thulla, and the trick stops right there; the players after you don't play in it.
The player who played the highest card of the led suit picks up every card in that trick, including the thulla card, into their hand. Then they lead the next trick. Everyone sees the thulla cards for 2 seconds, then they disappear into the picker's hand.
Getting out and the Gadha
When your hand is empty after a trick finishes, you are out and safe ('Bach gaya!'). If the next leader is already out, the lead passes clockwise to the next player with cards.
The last player still holding cards is the Gadha. If everyone left runs out on the very same trick, there is no Gadha that round.
Very long rounds
Thullas can keep hands alive for a while. If a round ever reaches 200 tricks, Mandli stops it, ranks players by cards left (fewest first), and the player with the most cards is the Gadha. In practice this almost never happens.
Points kaise milte hain
When you go out, you get 5 points for every player still holding cards at that moment. So with 5 players, the first out gets 20, the second 15, the third 10, the fourth 5, and the Gadha gets 0 plus the donkey stamp. Players who go out on the same trick get the same points. If everyone empties on the final trick, nobody is Gadha and each of them gets 5. Points carry into the room's total across games.
Jeetne ke tips
- Get rid of high cards in suits where others still follow; a clean trick is the safest place to dump an Ace.
- Try to run out of a suit early. Being void lets you thulla and push cards onto someone else.
- Remember who picked up a thulla. You now know some of their cards, and so does everyone else.
- Low cards are your friends near the end. A low card rarely makes you the picker.
- The leader chooses the suit, so leading a suit where you have the lowest cards keeps you safe.
Ghar wale rules aur variants
Many families play round after round and keep count of who became the Gadha most often. Mandli does something similar: points from every round add up in the room score.
At home the Gadha often has to shuffle and deal next, or do a small dare. Mandli just shows the donkey stamp, 'Aaj ka Gadha', and the Gadha sits out the next round if someone is waiting to play.
Small details change from home to home, such as who starts or what happens to clean tricks. Mandli always starts with the Hukum ka Ikka and always discards clean tricks face down.
Gadha Laut online kaise khelein
Start a room in Mandli and share the link on WhatsApp, or show the QR code to friends next to you. People without the app join from the browser link with just a name and a colour. Pick Saath mode if you're all in one room and can shout 'Thulla!' out loud, or Door mode when everyone is at home, with voice chat right inside the game (mic and speaker buttons, nothing recorded). Up to 8 sit at the table; others watch and never see anyone's hand. If a player leaves, a bot takes over their seat and plays the lowest legal card.
